  8.         I was watching T.V, trying to dodge all of the infomercials
  9. that they show at late hours of the night, when I saw the most
  10. ridiculous and misleading piece of advertising that anyone can be
  11. subjected to.  The commercial was one half hour long, dedicated
  12. to Macintosh, a paid advertisement from Apple, Inc.  Not only was the
  13. premise of the advertisement disgustingly sweet and family-oriented, it
  14. also happened to be a string of lies.  The following is a compilation
  15. of just a few examples cited in the commercial:

  18.     APPLE MYTH #1:  You must know actual (GASP!) commands in order to
  19.                     operate an IBM-compatible PC.
  20.  
  21.     REALITY CHECK:  Since most PC's now come loaded with Windows95 or
  22.                     WindowsNT, CLIs (Command Line Interfaces) have pretty
  23.                     much been reduced to mousing around.  Die-hards use
  24.                     DOS, but it is no longer necessary, and can be
  25.                     completely avoided if that is the way the user wishes
  26.                     it to be.

  29.     APPLE MYTH #2:  In order to run a CD-ROM title on an IBM compatible,
  30.                     you must "configure dipswitches and jumper settings."

  32.     REALITY CHECK:  Running a CD-ROM title on a PC requires nothing more
  33.                     than putting it in and installing it in much the same
  34.                     way required by Macintosh computers.

  37.     APPLE MYTH #3:  IBM compatibles have no multinedia capability off the
  38.                     shelf.  You need to purchase speakers, a sound card, and
  39.                     a CD-ROM drive in order to acquire this capability.

  41.     REALITY CHECK:  Every IBM compatible on the retail shelf comes with
  42.                     full multimedia capability.  In fact, most come with
  43.                     better quality speakers than the Macintoshes do and
  44.                     have MPEG capability (Power Macs do not).

  47.     APPLE MYTH #4:  IBM compatibles have no video editing capability under
  48.                     any circumstances.

  50.     REALITY CHECK:  All of those people using Snappy! (hardware based video
  51.                     editor) with their IBM compatibles must be performing
  52.                     miracles.  (NOTE:  The commercial led the consumer to
  53.                     believe that all Macintoshes are video editing capable
  54.                     right off of the shelf.  In fact, only one lower end
  55.                     model, the 6220 ($1999 before monitor), comes with
  56.                     this capabilty.)

  59.     APPLE MYTH #5:  IBM compatibles are not Plug n' Play.

  61.     REALITY CHECK:  Many IBM compatible peripherals, OSs, and other hardware
  62.                     are P n' P capable.  This is slowly becoming an
  63.                     industry standard, especially now that Windows95
  64.                     supports P n' P.

  67.     APPLE MYTH #6:  IBM compatibles come with little or no software.
  68.  
  69.     REALITY CHECK:  Packard Bell, Acer, Compaq, Hewlett Packard, and IBM
  70.                     have between $1700 - $2500 worth of software pre-loaded.

  73.     APPLE MYTH #7:  IBM compatibles cannot be just "plugged in" and booted.

  75.     REALITY CHECK:  Most of the major manufacturer's of home PC's are color
  76.                     coding all of their cables and including posters
  77.                     illustrating set-up.  On the Macs you must plug in the
  78.                     mouse, the keyboard, the monitor, and the printer, if
  79.                     you have one.  On the IBM compatibles you must plug
  80.                     in the mouse, the keyboard, the monitor, and the printer,
  81.                     if you have one.  I don't seem to be able to detect the
  82.                     difference.

  85.     APPLE MYTH #8:  The Internet is E-World and vice versa.  IBM clones
  86.                     have more trouble on the Internet than Macintoshes do.

  88.     REALITY CHECK:  Let's see...  There are 7 or more major GUI based
  89.                     Suites of Internet Software for IBM clones.  There is
  90.                     one Suite of Internet applications for the Macintosh.
  91.                     E-World is *not* the Internet, despite what Apple
  92.                     tells its' customers.

  95.     APPLE MYTH #9:  There are thousands of CD titles available for the
  96.                     Apple platform, not to mention that Apple has the best
  97.                     games.
  98.  
  99.     REALITY CHECK:  The only reliable place to find Mac software is in Mac
  100.                     catalogues.  Many retail stores carry thousands of
  101.                     titles for the IBM platforms, and less than 100 for
  102.                     the Mac platform.

  105.    APPLE MYTH #10:  Macintoshes are better because schools use them.

  107.     REALITY CHECK:  IBM's are better because businesses use them.  (The
  108.                     fact is that you cannot say that one platform is better
  109.                     than the other based on where/when you may use them.  It
  110.                     is faulty logic.)

  113.    APPLE MYTH #11:  IBM clones are useless educationally speaking because
  114.                     they do not have the Mac based WORLD OF LEARNING
  115.                     SOFTWARE.

  117.     REALITY CHECK:  There are just as many (if not more) educational titles
  118.                     for the IBM clones as there are for the Macintoshes.

  122.         Personally, I feel rather insulted that Apple would expect me,
  123. as a consumer, to believe all of these outright lies.  In my eyes this is
  124. a clear example of false advertising, or at least misrepresentation of
  125. information.  They used a 2-3 year old all-in-one Compaq unit as their
  126. example for the "IBM compatible of today".  Anyone who knows anything about
  127. the PC industry knows that *anything* from that "long" ago is outdated by
  128. now.  The bottom line is that they make false claims about their own
  129. products, insinuate several things that are simply untrue about other
  130. non-Apple products, and then ask you to spend money on their products as
  131. a result of these lies.  No wonder they are laying people off.  If this
  132. tye of treatment insults you (and it should), feel free to contact Apple
  133. themselves about their claims and ask them to prove that they are indeed

  141.         NOTE:  Their claims that Windows95 is MacOS '84 is also untrue.
  142.                According to an Apple Representative that I spoke with, he
  143.                said that the MacOS is not, and never has been,
  144.                mulithreading.  This is an important feature of Windows95.
  145.                Prior to Micro$oft's new OS, Unix variants have had this
  146.                feature prior to 1984.  So much for that.
